This seminar is called the adolescent and child abuse in literature, film, and reality. Within this class we touch on each one of these types in a different way. The first book called Invisible Kids took us down a path to learn more about the foster care and adoption system, and how children are place in Hamilton county. The book also provided many different resources and volunteers that are needed in order to make the system run smoothly. The book provided an outlook on what is around you that you may not notice on a day to day basis. The second book was called Bastard out of Carolina, and was a fictional booked; however, it looked into the life of a girl who was physically, emotionally, and sexual assaulted, and the obstacles that she had to encounter through all of this. It was an eye-opening book and lead to discussion about how nobody took this child away from all this abuse sooner. Looking at the literature the rest of the semester was articles that allowed for different aspects of child abuse to be looked upon, from juveniles, to sex offenders, to does evil really exist. All lead to the increase in knowledge of the subject matter. The second realm was film which there were multiple films looked at throughout the semester. Each film had a different aspect, by looking at how children behave after being sexual assaulted or isolated for 13 years, to looking at children who have been kidnapped by their father and kept hidden away for to 24 years, to children who are sold as sex slaves, and finally to prisons who regret what they have done. The final realm was reality and this was the trip that we took to Buckhorn. Buckhorn is a child abuse center that has multiple sites and can care for boys ages 8-17, girls ages 8-17, and autistic boys ages 8-21. All of these children have been abused in some way, and these are the most severe of all of them. My encounter at Buckhorn was only with the girls and there was a lot of horrifying stories of what had happened to these girls; however, talking to some of these girls you would not have the slightest idea that any of them had been through such horrid circumstances as a child. We had the chance to paint one cabin for one set of the girls and we able to see how they interact with us. The girls that we talked to had just arrived at Buckhorn and you could tell because of the many gashes along their wrists, and because of what they said when they wanted to be when they grew up. This trip was very humbling and taught me to not take things for granted and to always be happy with the life that I was brought up in. Finally, the whole class has made me consider a lot of different things that I want to do when I grow up, along with wanting to educate myself on the signs of abuse, so in turn I can educate the community. I do think these kids should have to suffer or even die because the community, or strangers do not catch the signs of abuse. Below is my response from the Buckhorn trip, along with my response 16. Response 16 had the prompt of explain whether or not you have observed such pressures in acquaintances and whether there are other stressors operating on adolescents that may cause psychological problems and negative behaviors. This prompt was done after reading the article “The Problem with Rich Kids.” The link for the article is here: https://www.psychologytoday.com/articles/201311/the-problem-rich-kids
