What? So What? During the Fall semester, I was enrolled in classes, and I got to take my first chemical engineering course along with participate in two honors experiences. Within my classes I got to learn the most important course within chemical engineering which is Material and Energy Balances. This class taught me a lot about the fundamentals of chemical engineering, and I could see how this particular class would relate within my professional career. During the fall semester, I took Gateway to Honors as a transition student, and was able to learn about honors as I was completing an honors seminar, and a pre-approved experience. The honors seminar that I experienced was called Adolescent and Child Abuse in Literature, Film, and Reality. In this class, we reflected on different discussion points within youth abuse and how we can help the community around us. We had the opportunity to travel to Buckhorn where we helped paint one of the cabins for the distressed girls. This experience lead me to want to continue to help children within the foster system, and those that have been abused. This was an extremely humbling experience and it has pushed me to think about the future and how I can help these children. My next honors experience was the pre-approved TA honors experience. Being a TA and being a part of this experience really enhanced the way that I look at how I want to help teach others. Being able to try to teach students in multiple ways and how to do that is extremely beneficial, and truly helped me to be a better teaching assistant to freshman students this semester. During the spring semester, I encountered my first co-op rotation where I worked for BASF at their Greenville, OH plant in the Resin II building. Within my co-op I gained valuable experiences while working within the industry as an operations engineer. The experiences I gained were accomplished through different tasks within the Acrylics building. Some of the tasks I was involved in were the PHA (Process Hazard Analysis) process where we would analyze the system and determine if more safe guards need to be put in place, and redesigning process flowcharts to ensure that it was the safest process for the operators. Most importantly I learned how much BASF values safety within their company. My first co-op experience gave me the opportunities that I was looking for, and allowed for me to evaluate if this is the type of chemical engineering job I would want to pursue after graduation. Now What? The Honors seminar about youth abuse really opened my eyes to the problems that are occurring within the community. Before this class I never thought about the issues that children are experiencing, and the class along with the trip to Buckhorn allowed for me to want to help these children and to shift my focus for community service. For the upcoming year, as the classes get harder, I would say the best advice that I could give myself for academics is to focus on learning the material, and to not stress about the grade. Within community service, the best advice that I can give myself is to continue to explore different opportunities and to not lose the passion that I gained from my youth abuse seminar, and finally to continue to want to help these children within the community. Leading in to the goals for the upcoming year, one major goal that I have is to continue to take advantage of the community service opportunities that the university provides the students, and to continue to see how the volunteer work I do directly effects myself and the community.
